12 What Lennon Taught Us (D –3)

Let’s not forget the conditions under which Yoko Ono lost a husband and the rest of the world lost the possibility of a Beatles reunion. John Lennon stepped out of a limo on West 72nd Street on New York’s Upper West Side in a previously ordinary December during a Monday Night Football game. A fat kid in glasses reading a J. D. Salinger book earmarked the page where the word “phony” first appears before putting it down and replacing it with something arguably more compelling than a YA novel about some unhappy white boy waxing poetic about his hard-knock ennui: a .38 caliber revolver loaded with a sleeve of banned hollow-point bullets designed to shred a body before taking its life.

Five clicks later, Lennon is no longer breathing. Mark David Chapman becomes a name you and I now must know. His reasons for doing the incomprehensible are too asinine to commemorate here—“Glory,” he said, forty years later, at his denied parole hearing. One person’s shitty, miserable life could interrupt another person’s full one at the precise moment when everyone’s just watching the telly and no one is expecting assassination. You can’t say I didn’t warn you. Now, if you’re surprised, it’s not because you didn’t see it coming.
